My husband ask me to dress our only child like a corpse, he said it was their family tradition.

*

Just as the car stopped and gurgled to a stop.

I saw a narrow path to the left, an old farm track, it was sloppy and barely wide enough for a bicycle.

I didn't think.

I yanked the wheel hard to the left.

The SUV skidded, crushing through the bush, bouncing v!olently over ridges of yam heaps.

The suspension groaned.

We crashed through a wall of tall grass and came to a halt behind a massive Iroko tree, invisible from the main road.

Everything went black.

"Quiet," I hissed, reaching back to cover Chike’s mouth with my hand. "Don't breathe."

Seconds later, the pickup truck roared past on the main road, its engine screaming.

The thugs were driving.

They missed the turn.

I exhaled, my body trembling so hard the car seat shook.

"We have to move," I whispered. "The car is dead. They will turn around when they don't see us ahead. We have to go into the bush."

"I’m scared," Chike whimpered.

"I know. But I am with you." I opened the door quietly. The night air was thick with the smell of wet earth and rotting leaves.

I grabbed my phone—12% battery. No signal.
I grabbed the machete I had taken from the shrine when I distracted the guards.

It felt heavy and wrong in my hand, but I gripped it tight.

We walked deeper into the forest. Every snapping twig sounded like a gunshot.

My bare feet sank into the mud.

Chike held onto my blouse so tight I felt his nails digging into my skin.

We walked for what felt like hours, until my legs burned and Chike could barely lift his feet.

We found an abandoned palm-wine tapper’s hut—just a roof of rusty zinc sheets on four wooden poles.

We collapsed underneath it.

"Sleep," I told Chike, pulling him onto my lap to keep him off the cold ground. "I will watch."

He fell asleep instantly from exhaustion.

I sat there in the dark, listening to the crickets and the beat of my own heart.

Then, my phone buzzed.

I nearly dropped it.

One bar of service.

One message.

It wasn't from Obinna.

It was a bank alert.

CREDIT: NGN 500,000,000.00
SENDER: UNKNOWN
DESC: PAYMENT COMPLETE.

My blood ran cold.

The money had come.

But the sacrifice wasn't done.

Chike was alive.

Why did the money come?

Then I remembered my mother-in-law’s words: "The gods want to eat."

And I remembered the thug I h!t with the car. The sickening crunch of bones.

A chill went up my spine that had nothing to do with the cold.

The sacrifice had been made. Bl00d had been spilled on the mother earth.

The ritual was complete.

But if the ritual was complete... why did I feel like something was standing right behind me in the dark?

I had felt odd about the house but I did not know what and where the feeling was coming from.

I slowly turned my head.

Two yellow eyes were watching me from the bush.

Not human eyes.

And not an animal I knew.

I stumbled back and fell as I heard a rustle from the bush.
