Airplane Sexual Assaults on Rise, Likely Underreported

Sexual assaults on airplanes are up, and likely underreported, a CBS News investigation findsAs you settle into your seat for a long-haul flight, the last thing on your mind is the risk of being sexually assaulted by a fellow passenger. But according to a recent investigation by CBS News, this disturbing reality is becoming increasingly common.

Rise in Airplane Sexual Assaults
A CBS News investigation found that the FBI investigated over 170 cases of passengers assaulting other passengers on flights in 2024, a sharp increase from about 130 the year before. While this number may seem small compared to the millions of air travelers each year, experts warn that it's likely just the tip of the iceberg.

Underreporting and Lack of Accountability
The investigation revealed that many incidents go unreported due to a lack of information sharing between airlines and authorities. The FBI relies on victims coming forward to report assaults, but this can be a daunting task for those who have experienced trauma. Furthermore, the airline industry is not required to report numbers, leaving a significant gap in data.

Expert Insights
Sara Nelson, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants, shared her own experience as a victim of sexual assault on a flight. She emphasized that the changing dynamics of air travel, including closer seating and reduced staffing, have created an environment where assaults can more easily occur. Nelson stressed the importance of accountability and information sharing to prevent future incidents.

Victims Speak Out
Renee Solofra, a victim of airplane sexual assault, shared her harrowing experience on a flight from Chicago to Florida in 2023. She described being grabbed by a man sitting next to her and having her phone taken away. Solofra's story highlights the need for prompt reporting and support for victims.

Call to Action
Solofra has filed a lawsuit against American Airlines, urging passengers to report assaults promptly and calling on airlines to share numbers with authorities. Daisy Ayllón, a partner at the law firm representing Solofra and other victims, emphasized that information sharing is key to tackling this issue.

The rise in airplane sexual assaults highlights the need for greater awareness, accountability, and support for victims. By working together, we can create a safer environment for air travelers and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
